Where there is curry, there is rice. This is a delicious browned onion cumin rice, that'll go with all your curries. The sauteed onion and cumin just adds that extra omph to your basmati rice, that takes your basic curry dish to next level.

I struggled with cooking rice for almost all my life! Honestly, until I found this method and it has never failed me. I have used Basmati rice for this recipe.

This recipe is quick and full proof. Just follow the simple and easy steps and get amazing fluffy and fragrant rice EVERY TIME!

If you have Jasmine rice, cook them for 20mins instead and keep all the steps same and you will end up with beautifully cooked Jasmine rice.

Ingredients

  • 1tbsp Oil
  • 1tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 1 Medium Onion Sliced
  • 2 Cups Rice
  • 1/2tsp Salt
  • 4Cups Water

Steps

  • Start by rinsing the rice to remove some starch.
  • Add plenty of water so the rice is covered well with water and let it sit for 30-60 minutes. Soaking will help the rice become more aromatic.
  • Slice your onion thinly and set aside.
  • In a pot, add oil and set the heat to high.
  • Add cumin seeds and cook for 2-3 minutes, until the seeds go dark brown and fragrant.
  • Add sliced onion, salt and cook until golden brown.
  • Once your onion is browned, drain the water from your soaked rice and add rice to the pan.
  • Combine everything and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  • Add 4 cups of water and mix well.
  • Now the main steps, bring pot to a boil by keeping the heat on high.
  • THIS IS THE KEY: Once water starts boiling, bring the heat to your lowest setting, put a lid on and cook for EXACTLY 15 minutes.
  • After the 15 minutes are over, turn off the heat. DO NOT TAKE THE LID OFF, RICE IS STILL COOKING.
  • Wait for at least 10-15 minutes. Remove the lid and use a fork to fluff the rice.
  • That's it! Serve this beautifully fragrant fluffy rice with your choice of curry. Enjoy!
